Scandia Wind started out about 10 years ago when a local progressive guy, Jim B. Swafford, and local farmers thought that the ever-blowing wind in the Texas should be put to use. Alpha Wind Energy was invited to look at the conditions which was found to be excellent in just about all matters. Nice strong wind – one of the best in the US, few farms and dwellings in the countryside, flat, open farmland – no trees or other obstacles, electrical grid relatively close by and the area needed a new crop, as irrigation is necessary for growing good crops and the water level from which the water is pumped is dropping deeper and deeper and hence are becoming more expensive to utilize. No environmental issues. And the community could use a better tax base.
So Scandia Wind LLC, owned by locals and Alpha Wind Energy, was started and a lot of efforts and resources was put into development, wind measurements and other factfinding. The farmers interest to participate proved to be overwhelming and today we have land for more than 10.000MW of windfarms and the detailed development of the areas are taken place and the projects are ready and several of them are sold. Of the ones sold, 230MW has been built. Around 3000MW are being developed in Parmer County and there is room for around 7000MW in the Sherman and Dallam counties.
